Charging and feeding hoppers; vehicle fittings and attachments.-In loading and discharging apparatus for coal, ore, grain, &c., particularly for use with coke ovens, furnaces, vehicles, barges, boats, steel slag-tips, pig beds, &c., the material is loaded into a receiving-hopper and subsequently transferred to a shoot, from which it is discharged into the oven &c. The hopper d, Fig. 3, and the shoot i are mounted on a car a, which is driven by electric or other power. The hopper d is either mounted in bearings e and tipped by gearing g, or provided with slides which can be withdrawn to discharge the material. The backplate of the shoot i may be convex, and slides may be provided for controlling the rate of discharge. Levers k having hooked ends l are provided for raising the covers r of oven-charging holes, the levers being raised by ropes m wound on drums n, which are keyed on a shaft rotated by worm gearing. If the end doors 4 of coke ovens &c. are to be lifted, the car is provided with a longitudinally movable bar t carrying at its outer end a frame u, in which is mounted a shaft v having a wormwheel wand drum x attached, driven by the shaft z. The height of the frame may be adjusted by means of a lever 2 and cam 3 to allow for irregularities in the track. Means may be provided for automatically stopping the car in position for charging any desired oven.
