Abstract
Silicon tetrachloride is obtained as a product in the exothermic reaction of methylaluminium-sesquichloride on a 70/30 mixture of dimethyl-tetrachlorodisilane and trimethyltrichlorodisilane. In Example 2 the SiCl4 is 67% of the distilled-off reaction mixture.ALSO:Substituted monosilanes are produced by reacting one or more disilanes of the formula RnSi2X6- n, where R is C1- 4 alkyl, X is halogen, and n is 0 or an integer up to 6, with at least one organo-aluminium halide of the formula R1mAlX13- m, where R1 is C1- 4 alkyl, X1 is halogen, and m is 1, 2 or 3; there being present in the reaction mixture at least one R1 group for each Si atom. The disilane used is preferably a high-boiling residue from the reaction of Si and an alkyl halide. R and R1 are suitably Me; X and X1 are Cl. Up to 4 R1 groups/Si atom may be present. The reaction is exothermic, and cooling may be necessary to keep within the preferred 20-200 DEG C. range. A solvent, e.g. benzene, toluene or methylcyclohexane, may be present. The products are recovered by distillation, solvent extraction or layer separation. A number of disilanes and siloxanes are specified as by-products in the reaction.
