Abstract

1,065,810. Machine tool details. BEAVER PRECISION PRODUCTS Inc. Jan. 25, 1966 [Feb. 12, 1965], No. 3304/66. Heading B3B. [Also in Division F2] A rectilinear-motion bearing with re-circulating balls for supporting the carriage of a machine tool comprises an intermediate member (21), Figs. 3 and 6 (not shown), having a hole (17 or 18) adjacent each end thereof; a lower member (22), Figs. 4 and 7 (not shown), having a load-supporting channel (15) therein which connects with the holes (17 and 18) in the intermediate member (21); and an upper member (23), Figs. 4 and 10 (not shown), having a return channel (16) therein which connects with said holes (17 and 18) in the intermediate member (21). The balls (14) are retained in the load-supporting and return channels (15, 16) by inclined walls (25), (27) which are integral with walls (24, 26) of the respective channels (15, 16) and are guided from channel to hole and vice versa, by rounded faces (32) formed in the members (22, 23). The depth of the load-supporting channel (15) is less than the diameter of the balls (14) so that the latter can protrude and engage a non-movable member (12), whereas the depth of the return channel (16) is greater than the diameter of the balls (14). The members (22, 21) and (23), having holes (34, 35) and (36) therein, Fig. 8 (not shown), are connected together by hollow rivets (33); the ends of the rivets being upset in counter-bores (37, 38) of the holes (34, 36) so as to clear surfaces (29, 30) of the upper and lower members respectively. The assembly may be attached to a movable member (39) by pins (42) which are secured thereto and are received by the hollow rivets (33). The pins (42) are hollow, split at (43) and are made of spring steel. In an alternative method of attaching the assembly to a movable member, the upper member (23) is recessed at (49), Fig. 9 (not shown), to receive extensions (48) of a member (45) which, having holes (47) therein, is screwed to the movable member.
