Abstract

In a continuous process of pickling maning ferrous strip and regenerating pickle liquor, the strip is treated, preferably by spraying, with a liquor maintained at 5% - 18% by weight HCl at 140 DEG - 200 DEG F., a known volume of spent liquor being continuously withdrawn and sprayed into an evaporator where ferric chloride is converted to ferric oxide and the vapourized HCl is condensed and collected in water to produce a 20% acid solution which is returned to the pickling process. According to the Figure (not shown) the strip passes through the pickling tower (1) via rollers and is sprayed with acid from sprays (15a), (16a), (17a) supplied from tank (7). Excess pickling liquor is removed from the strip by air jets (18) and squeegee rolls (19) and the strip then passes into water tank (8). The used liquor is pumped from tank (7) into a roaster (24) and the ferric oxide is deposited into container (27). The HCl vapour pass via cyclone (29) to absorber (31) supplied with cooling water from (32). The HCl solution formed is passed to a storage tank which supplies tank (7).
