Abstract

1,065,234. Pistons. MISSION MANUFACTURING CO. May 4, 1964, No. 18469/64. Heading F2T. In a pump piston 8 comprising annular seals 20 of elastomeric material abutting each side of a central radial flange 18 on the piston and anti - extrusion nylon rings 30 in recesses in the seals adjacent the flange, in order to prevent extrusion of the seal material over the rings 30 at least a portion of the interface 28 between each ring 30 and seal 20 is tapered outwardly to the piston axis in a direction away from the flange and the angle of such taper and the radial thickness of the ring 30 adjacent its end remote from the flange are such that when the seal is under pressure the rate of expansion of the ring in the vicinity of the outer circumferential interface is at least equal to and preferably greater than that of the seal. An analysis for determining the required taper angle and radial thickness is given in the Specification. The seals are retained by plates 22 located by splitrings 24. In the modification shown in Fig. 6 the interface between the nylon ring 46 and the seal 20 has a tapered portion 48 and the seal is reinforced by embedded fibres in the area 58.
