Abstract

A stable, substantially anhydrous dispersion of 95/5 to 5/95 (weight ratio) tetrafluoroethylene/hexafluoropropylene copolymer particles in an organic liquid, which forms a water/organic liquid azeotrope and which does not physically or chemically interfere with the polymer dispersion, said copolymer particles having an average radius of from 0.01 to 3 microns, no particles having radii larger than 3 microns, is obtained by slowly adding an aqueous dispersion of the particulate tetrafluoroethylene/hexafluoropropylene copolymer to a boiling organic liquid in a vessel and continuously withdrawing the vapours of the resulting water/organic liquid azeotrope, separating the organic liquid from the azeotrope and returning it to the vessel, until the organic liquid in the vessel is substantially anhydrous and then (c) comminuting the resulting material. The dispersion may also contain additional film-forming components, e.g. alkyd resins, epoxide resins, acrylic polymers, nitrocellulose, phenolformaldehyde resin, aminoplast resin or a polyurethane. Thermosetting films can be obtained by adding to the dispersion a precursor for a thermally stable polymeric material or a thermally stable polymeric material having a decomposition point above that of the copolymer, e.g. a polyimide precursor, poly-(m-phenylene diamine isophthalamide), a polyoxadiazole or polyvinylidene fluoride. Polyimide precursors exemplified are a polyamide acid solution made by reacting benzophenone tetracarboxylic dianhydride and p,p1-methylene dianiline and a polyamide acid ester made by reacting dibutyl ester of benzophenone tetracarboxylic acid and methylene dianiline. Organic liquids used are toluene and methyl isobutyl ketone.ALSO:Metals e.g. steel and aluminium are coated with a composition comprising (a) a particulate tetrafluoroethylene / hexafluoropropylene copolymer and (b) a film-forming component dispersed in an organic liquid (see Division C3). Thermosetting coating compositions may be obtained if (b) is a precursor for a thermally stable polymeric material or a thermally stable polymeric material having a decomposition point above that of (a). Film forming components may be alkyd resins, epoxide resins, acrylic polymers, nitrocellulose, phenol-formaldehyde resin, ammoplast resin or a polyurethane. Thermosetting compositions are obtained when (b) is a polyimide precursor, poly (m-phenylenediamine isphthalamide) or polyvinylidene fluoride. The compositions may be applied by brushing, spraying or doctor blading. The compositions are useful in coating wire, metal foil, cooking utensils, boilers, pipes, ship bottoms, ice-cube trays, industrial containers, moulds, and as binding agents in the preparation of coated glass fabrics.
