Abstract

Filamentary material, in the form of untensioned, twisted or non-twisted, continuous filaments of nylon or polypropylene possessing latent (and perhaps patent) crimp, is deposited in the form of overlapping flat loops or preformed coils across the width of a permeable supporting web e.g. a foraminous or open-mesh polyester or polyolefin fabric or spaced parallel threads thereof, travelling at a lower speed than the speed with which the material is supplied to the web so that the web supports ten to five hundred times its own length of filamentary material, and the full crimp is developed by heating the relaxed filaments with steam or a hot liquid while they are on the web. The layer of filamentary material may be secured on the web by spaced holding threads or an endless belt moving with the web. A dyeing package may be formed by rolling a multilayer assembly of the web and the crimped material.
