Abstract
1,064,376. Cardiac pacemakers. WILSON GREATBATCH, Inc. Oct. 18 1963 [Oct. 18, 1962], No. 41187/63. Heading A5R. An implantable cardiac pacemaker or electrical pulse generating device for stimulation of the heart, has percutaneously actuated pulse rate and amplitude controls. As shown, the controls comprise variable potentiometers 2. Each control comprises a worm wheel 4 to which is connected a potentionmeter element (23') (Fig. 7, not shown) which is driven across resistance (23) upon rotation of wheel 4 by worm 5. Worm 5 has head 7 in which is engaged adaptor 10 having recess 12, which adaptor is surrounded by sleeve 16 having recess 18. Recesses 12 and 18 are filled with, e.g. silicone grease and the controls are enclosed in puncturable material (e.g. silicone rubber) which is nontoxic and compatible with the human body. To alter a control when the pacemaker is implanted in the body, the position of the desired knob 22 is determined by touch, and a needle (14) (Fig. 3, not shown) is inserted through the skin and guided into recess 12 by sleeve 16. On rotating the needle (14) the adaptor 10 and worm 5 are rotated and thus wheel 4 is rotated to alter the position of potentiometer element (23') along the resistance (23).
