Abstract
Apparatus is described for applying gum to the longitudinal seam (1), (Fig. 1, not shown) of a paper wrapper disposed around a continuous tobacco rod (2) in cigarette-making machinery, the apparatus comprising a gum feed pipe (6) supplying gum via a distributor wheel (4) to an applying wheel (3) means being provided at the outlet of the feed pipe to shut off the flow of gum. As shown the flow may be shut off by means of an electrically controlled valve (8), operation of which may be synchronised with the stopping of rotation of wheels (3, 4). In an alternative arrangement (Fig. 2, not shown) the distributor and applying wheels are mounted on a pivotally supported base the pivotal support itself being the plug member of the valve in the gum feed line. If the application of gum to the tobacco rod is to be arrested the base carrying the applying wheel is pivoted away from the operating position and in so doing also shuts off the supply of gum. In a further embodiment (Figs. 3, 4, 5, not shown) an air pressurised gum reservoir is provided with a tubular connection leading to the distributor wheel and having an outlet portion shaped to seat on and seal against the wheel. The reservoir is mounted so as to be lifted in operation by means of an electromagnet to allow flow on to the distributor wheel and to be returned by spring force, when the flow of gum is to be shut off, to bring the outlet of the tube against the periphery of the wheel. In a further embodiment (Figs. 6, 7, 8, not shown) a pair of coacting gear wheels are mounted within the gum feed pipe adjacent the outlet and are driven at variable speed to pump the gum forward on to the distributor wheel. The flow of gum is then arrested by arresting the rotation of the gear wheels. In a still further embodiment (Figs. 10, 11, 12, not shown) the outlet end of the gum feed pipe is shaped to complement the shape of the distributor wheel and is spaced therefrom by a very small distance only. In this case when the distributor wheel ceases to rotate an annular crust of herdened gum forms around the outlet and prevents escape of any further gum. The electrical circuitry of the tobacco machine as a whole is preferably arranged so that the gum applying device is not brought into operation until and unless the tobacco rod is being forwarded at above a certain minimum speed.ALSO:Apparatus is described for applying gum to the longitudinal seam (1) (Fig. 1, not shown) of a paper wrapper disposed around a continuous tobacco rod (2) in cigarette-making machinery the apparatus comprising a gum feed pipe (6) supplying gum via a distributor wheel (4) to an applying wheel (3), means being provided at the outlet of the feed pipe to shut off the flow of gum. In this case when the distributor wheel ceases to rotate an annular crust of hardened gum forms around the outlet and prevents escape of any further gum. The electrical circuitry of the tobacco machine as a whole is preferably arranged so that the gum applying device is not brought into operation until and unless the tobacco rod is being forwarded at above a certain minimum speed.
