In an arrangement for determining the moisture content of solid substances comprising a fast neutron source and a thermal neutron detector located in a cavity at least partially defined by the solid substance, said solid substance is at least partially bounded by a solid hydrogencontaining material capable of reflecting fast neutrons as thermal neutrons. The hydrogencontaining material may be paraffin wax, polythene or concrete and preferably does not completely surround the substance under test.
