Abstract

1,063,287. Data transmission. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Aug. 26, 1964 [Sept. 20, 1963], No. 34991/64. Heading H4P. A data transmission system comprises means for generating a sequence of pulses corresponding to each input character, and a receiver which derives from the sequence a number of patterns of energization on its output terminals, there being a terminal corresponding to each character. A counting arrangement indicates the terminal which corresponds to the particular character transmitted by indicating the terminal which received the greatest number of zeros. In the system described switches a-e are set up to represent one of ten characters. The switches complete feed-back loops between the stages T1-T5 of a shift register Re and its input via modulo 2 adders m-p. A pulse at Ed starts the register, which develops at its output a sequence of pulses, which repeats until stopped and which represents the input character. At the receiver the sequence feeds a shift register Rr whose stages are connected to various ones of ten modulo 2 adders L0-L9. As the sequence of pulses is received, so a sequence of patterns of energization appears at the outputs of L0-L9. It is shown that that output which is zero throughout the sequence corresponds to the input character. In the event of noise in the transmission channel the sequence will be disturbed and so that terminal which receives the greatest number of zeros is the significant one.
