Abstract

1,063,243. Lasers. HILGER & WATTS Ltd. Dec. 2, 1963 [Dec. 13, 1962], No. 47124/62. Heading H1C. The light-emitting end reflector of a solid or gaseous laser has a prismatic or conical form which normally gives complete internal reflection, the light output being obtained through a small facet orthogonal to the longitudinal axis of the active medium. The reflector may be a roof prism, Fig. 1, formed with a small lighttransmitting facet 12, or may be either a tetrahedral or a pyramidal prism, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), or a cone which is slightly truncated to provide the light-transmitting facet. In an application to a ruby laser, Fig. 4, comprising an active rod 40 and axenon flash tube 50 positioned at respective foci of an elliptical reflector casing 48, the active rod has both ends formed with prismatic or conical surfaces 44, 46, the output end additionally including a light-transmitting facet 42. Also shown is the power supply 52 for the flash tube, and a trigger pulse device 54 connected between one end of the tube and an ignition electrode 56. These circuits are of the usual form, Fig. 6 (not shown). A helium-neon laser is shown in Fig. 7 in which the active gas is enclosed in a silica tube 78 having its ends 80 positioned at the Brewster angle. The polarized emission is reflected completely at one end by a member 82 having a fully silvered face 82a, and is emitted from the other end which comprises a member 84 having prismatic or conical reflecting surfaces and a small light-transmitting facet.
