Abstract

Phthalic anhydride is obtained by interacting o-xylene with oxygen in the vapour phase at an elevated temperature in the presence of a catalyst comprising an oxide of Te in admixture or combination with an oxide of V. The source of o-xylene may also contain one or more other alkylbenzenes. A gaseous diluent, e g N2, may be present in the reaction mixture. The preferred reaction temperature is in the range 250 DEG to 550 DEG C. Examples are given for the production of phthalic anhydride showing the effect of the catalyst on the yield. Maleic anhydride is also obtained as by-product in some of the Examples.ALSO:An oxidation catalyst comprises an oxide of Te in admixture or combination with an oxide of V. It may be prepared either by mixing aqueous solutions or suspensions of oxides, acids or salts of Te and V, and calcining the residue obtained by evaporation of the aqueous solution; or by thoroughly mixing the component oxides, acids or salts in the dry state before calcination. Tellurium is preferably introduced as TeO2 or as a compound giving rise to TeO2 during the preparation of the catalyst. The catalyst may be used in finely divided form or as granules or pellets. The catalyst may be deposited on a support material.
