Abstract

1,062,187. Electro-mechanical delay line. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO. Inc. Sept. 19, 1963 [Sept. 26, 1962], No. 36877/63. Heading H3U. An ultrasonic delay line for use at microwave frequencies comprises a magnetic crystal transducer (13) having substantial gyromagnetic properties mounted upon a non-magnetic delay crystal (12), the two materials having such similar crystal structures that at their interface they form a continuous crystal lattice. The transducer may be produced by growing a crystal of suitable magnetic material upon a face of the delay line material, e.g. magnetic yttrium iron garnet upon non-magnetic yttrium aluminuim or gallium garnet, or magnetic magnesium iron oxide upon magnesium aluminate. In the device illustrated, a D.C. field (H) is applied to the transducer and has a strength such that the gyromagnetic material (13) is biased into the neigh bourhood of ferro-magneticresonance, and input energy at microwave frequencies is applied by a coaxial line (15, 17) connected as illustrated to a conductive ring (16) surrounding the end of a rod (12) and the transducer (13). As a result of magneto-striction and gyromagnetic precession about the biasing field H, circularly polarized acoustic waves are excited in the layer (13) and transferred to the delay rod (12) and output transducer (14) &c.
