Displacement or force is measured by the variation in frequency of a relaxation oscillator which includes a tunnel diode 35, Fig. 5, a resistance 37, and an inductance P, the value of the inductance depending upon the displacement of a core in a coil 4, Fig. 1 (not shown), of one coil relative to another 13, 15, Fig. 3 (not shown), or of one part of a magnetic core carrying the inductance coil relative to the remainder of the core Fig. 2 (not shown). The frequency may be measured directly, or indicated remotely by telemetric means. A potential divider 37, 38 in the oscillator circuit may be temperature dependent or voltage dependent to allow for variation in temperature or supply voltage. A D.C. supply U n is connected via an RC network 44, 45, 46 to a terminal 31 of the oscillator circuit, and the output of the oscillator is fed through a resistor 34 and capacitor 33 to the terminal 31, and thence to a frequency measuring device 47. An R. C. circuit 38, 39, 40 is provided to isolate the oscillator output from the D. C. input.
