Abstract

Novel dyeable copolymers comprise units of acrylonitrile, preferably in an amount of at least 80% by weight, from 0.25 to 10% by weight of units of an allyloxybenzene-sulphonate of the formula <FORM:1061585/C3/1> wherein R and R1 are hydrogen or C1- 3 alkyl radicals and Y represents an alkali metal, and optionally units of another monoethylenically unsaturated compound. The invention also relates to novel dyeable blends comprising a homopolymer or copolymer of acrylonitrile with from 1 to 50% by weight of the blend of another polymeric material, the blend having a polymerized acrylonitrile content of at least 80% by weight and from 0.20 to 10% by weight of a polymerized allyloxybenzene-sulphonate as defined above present in either of the polymeric components of the blend. Optional components of the novel copolymers include esters, nitriles and amides of acrylic, methacrylic and alphachloroacrylic acids, vinyl and vinylidene halides, methyl vinyl ketone, vinyl carboxylates, N-vinylimides, methylene malonic esters, N-vinyl-carbazole, vinyl furane, alkyl vinyl ethers, alkyl citraconates and mesaconates, styrene, vinyl naphthalene, vinyl pyridines and vinyl imidazoles. A preferred polymer blend comprises an acrylonitrile-vinyl acetate-allyloxybenzene-sulphonate terpolymer and a copolymer of acrylonitrile and a vinyl-substituted tertiary heterocyclic amine, the blend containing 2-10% by weight of said amine. The novel copolymers may be prepared by polymerizing the appropriate monomers in an aqueous medium, preferably at 40-60 DEG C., in the presence of a catalyst such as a potassium or ammonium salt of a peroxy acid, sodium peroxide, hydrogen peroxide or sodium perborate. In examples, acrylonitrile and an allyloxybenzene-sulphonate are copolymerized together with vinyl acetate or vinylidene chloride in the presence of potassium persulphate/sodium bisulphite and, also, in one example, a small content of iron, the polymerization being effected continuously or with continuous addition of monomer and initiator during polymerization. Acrylonitrile - methacrylonitrile - 2 - vinylpyridine -allyloxybenzene-sulphonate copolymers are also specifically mentioned. The novel copolymers and blends are particularly suitable for forming filaments and fibres, but may also be used in forming films, coating compositions, moulding operations and lacquers.
