Breaking and scutching apparatus.-In flaxbreaking machines having three or more horizontal rows of rollers, the flax being passed first between the nips of the upper pairs of rollers, then in the reverse direction between the nips of the second and third rows, and so on, the bottom roller of each vertical row is the driving-roller for the row, and the bearings of each roller are independently adjustable to vary the depth of mesh of the rollers, and carry the weight of the roller rotating therein and also of the superimposed rollers. The lowest roller of each vertical row is driven by chain gearing from the roller d<1>, Fig. 1, which is geared directly to the main driving-shaft. The bearings c of the rollers slide between vertical guides f and rest upon horizontal bars b separated by distance-pieces b<1>. The bearings c are separated by blocks q, Fig. 6, which can be changed to adjust the depth of mesh of the fluted rollers. The flax may be fed in by a feed trough n, or by a rotary funnel p, Fig. 4, provided with vanes p<1> and rollers p', whereby a twist is imparted to the flax. The treated flax is received upon an apron m. A combination of plain, fluted, spiral, or equivalent rollers may be employed, the plain rollers being provided with fluted ends to mesh with fluted rollers above and below. The rollers may vary in pitch and depth of mesh in each horizontal row.
