Abstract

1,061,176. Gas holders of variable capacity. GENERAL AMERICAN TRANSPORTA. TION CORPORATION. March 17, 1964, No. 11268/64. Heading F4X. A telescopic gas holder comprises a container A, B, C; a piston D rigidly attached to an annular fender E which moves vertically in the container and constitutes the top wall of the gas storage chamber, and inner and outer vertically movable annular fenders F and G positioned concentrically between the container wall B and the fender E and joined together at their top edges 9 and 10 by a set of chains or wire ropes 8 positioned at angularly spaced intervals in the annular space between the fenders when the fenders are in the lowermost position, Fig. 1 (not shown). Flexible sealing curtains H, K and L made of a gas-tight fabric are attached between the side wall B and the outer fender G, the outer fender G and inner fender F and the inner fender F and the piston fender E, the connections being made by seal bars 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7. When the gas holder is being filled piston D moves up together with fender E and the sealing curtain L unrolls from the outer surface of fender E on to the inner surface of fender F. When the piston reaches the position shown in Fig. 2 (not shown) the top edge of fender E catches under a set of hooks 11 positioned around the top of fender F and pulls up fender F. When fender F reaches the position shown in Fig. 3 the chains 8 pull up fender H and the piston moves up to the top of its stroke Fig. 4 (not shown).
