Abstract

1,061,130. Photo-conductive devices. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. March 26, 1964, No. 12347/63. Heading H1K. Radiation in the waveband from 20 to 200 microns is detected by a photoconductive cell comprising a cooled mass of very pure semiconductor material traversed by a magnetic field in excess of 8,000 gauss. As shown, radiation is fed down a light pipe 5, through a black polythene filter 8A, to one face of an N-type indium antimonide plate 1 which is subject to a magnetic field applied by a superconducting niobium-zirconium coil 10 wound on a copper spool 11, the field being perpendicular to the current flow through the plate 1 between indium electrodes 2A, 3A. The plate 1 is kept at 4À2‹ K. in a cryostat 4, 24. The coil 10 is connected in parallel with a loop 17 of niobium wire which passes through a German silver heater winding 19 controlled by a switch (30, Fig. 2) to inhibit the superconductivity of the shunt 17 as required for control purposes. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 938,021.
