Abstract
1,061,009. Tea and coffee aromas. SALADA FOODS Ltd. Feb. 15, 1965 [Jan. 2, 1965], No. 6458/65. Heading A2B. [Also in Division B1] Concentrates of aroma bearing liquids subject to oxidative degradation are prepared from liquid extracts of, for example, tea or coffee by fractional distillation in an inert atmosphere which may comprise nitrogen, carbon dioxide or mixtures thereof. A tea extract 2 in a distillation flask 1 is purged of oxygen by bubbling nitrogen through a porous plug 4 lowered into the extract. The plug 4 is then raised and the nitrogen flow continued until the oxygen content of the atmosphere in the flask 1 as detected by a meter 9 is below 0.2%. Heat is then applied to the flask I with a continued but reduced nitrogen flow and the extract is fractionated through a column 11 packed, for example, with woven stainless steel helices. The distillate is condensed in a condenser 13, cooled by a heat exchanger 17 and collected under nitrogen in a receiver 18.
