Abstract

1,060,578. Treatment chambers. N. A. MACLEOD. June 19, 1964 [June 21, 1963], No. 25398/64. Heading ASR. A chamber for applying fluid pressure to a limb to exercise a joint comprises means 13, 29, 30 for supporting a limb or part of a limb in direct contact with a fluid in the chamber and means for alternately applying pressure to the fluid and releasing said pressure so that the limb is alternately stretched and relaxed. A chamber 10 is open at one end for receiving a leg, a seal 13 being provided at the open end to surround the thigh. The seal has an inner periphery which engages the thigh and which is connected to a source of reduced pressure to render it fluid-tight when the leg is in the chamber. The leg is supported by hard rubber cushions 24, 25, 26 and the foot is secured by straps 29, 30. The chamber receives a liquid through a fitting 35, a fitting 36 permitting the escape of air during the fitting process. The pressure of the liquid is cyclically increased and decreased as a piston 44 is reciprocated, the piston being resiliently connected to a compressed air-driven reciprocating piston 50 which is controlled by a slide valve 56. Increase in pressure applied to the liquid causes the thigh to move outwardly of the chamber thus extending the knee joint. The chamber may also be open at the other end and have a seal extending around the ankle so that the foot lies outside the chamber. The apparatus may be modified to enclose the whole or part of a hand or arm, a seal being provided around the wrist or shoulder, and the finger tips or wrist being resiliently secured within the chamber, so that the application of pressure variations to the liquid in the chamber causes stretching of the joints of the fingers or the elbow. The chamber may be filled with gas, the pressure of which is cyclically varied.
