Abstract

A dye receptive article comprises a shaped mixture of a major proportion of a high molecular weight hydrocarbon polymer and a minor proportion of a polymer having amide groups, the article having been treated with a Lewis acid capable of diffusing into the shaped mixture and reacting at least partially with the amide polymer. The hydrocarbon polymer may be polypropylene, polyethylene, poly-1-butene, or poly-(4-methyl-1-pentene) and the amide polymer poly(vinylpyrrolindone), polyacrylamide, an interpolymer of hexamethylene adipamide, hexamethylene sebacamide and caprolactam or poly(alkyl phenyl-N-vinylpyrrolidone) present preferably in from 3 to 10% of the mixture. The Lewis acid may be a mineral acid, an organo-carboxylic acid, phenol, acid gases, a volatile halide of a non-metallic acid, an acid halide of an organo-carboxylic acid, an alkyl halide containing a conjugated group, chlorine hypochlorous acid, an ester of an inorganic polybasic acid, or a metal salt. The article may be in the form of a fibre or fabric and may be subjected to the further step of dyeing.ALSO:A dye receptive article comprising a fibre or fabric of a major proportion of a high molecular weight hydrocarbon polymer and a minor proportion of a polymer having amide groups the article having been treated with a Lewis acid capable of diffusing into the shaped mixture and reacting at least partially with the amide polymer is dyed with an acid, direct, premetallised or vat dye. Examples are given of the treatment of (1) polypropylene multifilament containing 5% polyamide and knitted into a tubular fabric which is then immersed in phosphorus trichloride with an acid dye (2) a similar polypropylene fabric immersed in formic acid, or in acetic acid or in phenol with the same acid dye (3) and (4) similar polypropylene fabric immersed in similar Lewis acids and dyed with a neutralised metallised dye or with an acid dye and (5) a polypropylene monofilament containing 10% polyamide immersed in phosphorus trichloride and dyed with an acid dye.
