Abstract
1,059,624. Locating leaks in conduits. SCOTT CORPORATION. Sept. 23, 1963, No.37410/63. Heading G1S. Leaks in a conduit are detected by moving sampling means 27 with one end below the earth's surface, through the earth, fluid from the earth being drawn through a passageway 54, forming part of the sampling means 27, to a detecting device which will detect any material e.g. methane or nitrous oxide escaping from the conduit. The sampling means 27 is provided with a plough 56 to stir up the earth and is connected to a carriage 29 which is moved over the earth's surface by a motor. The plough may be shaped with wings and have a flap hinged to the wings to prevent dirt entering the sampling means if it is moved backwards. The detecting device may comprise an infrared absorption device.
