Abstract

1,059,486. Reactors. GESELLSCHAFT FœR KERNFORSCHUNG m.b.H. May 11, 1964 [May 11, 1963], No. 19608/64. Heading G6C. A steam-cooled nuclear reactor has a shield surrounding its core, the shield in turn being surrounded by at least two ring mains, one of which conveys superheated steam from the core to evaporators arranged around the shield, and the other carrying steam from the evaporators to the core. A third ring main carries superheated steam from a compression unit to a prime mover, and a fourth conveys condensate from the prime mover to the evaporators. The core and coolant circuit is arranged in the lower half of a spherical containment vessel, the upper half of which houses handling equipment and a storage tank containing safety flood water. A vessel is provided below the core which divides the fuel mass to prevent criticality if it should melt and drain from the reactor. Shut-down cooling facilities are provided, and also a preheater unit for start-up. Coolant circuit (Fig. 3).-The first ring main 11 conveys superheated steam from the core to turbines 12 and evaporators 13. The second ring main 21 carries wet steam from the evaporators 13 to the pump 14 and thence to the core. The third ring main 19 collects superheated steam from the turbines 12 for conveyance to the prime mover.
