In a card punching machine comprising a card supply magazine 6, an intermediate card stopping position 7, a column-by-column punching station 8 and a card track along which cards 5 are moved in stages, the card track comprises a helical passage 71 at the outlet of the magazine 6, a pair of rollers 55, 56 is provided for moving a card leaving the magazine (under the action of a knife 27, Fig. 10B) into a first waiting position 1ATT and pairs of rollers 78, 72 and 77, 73 are provided for moving a card from position 1ATT into a second waiting position 2ATT in front of the punching station. The machine also comprises a further intermediate stopping position 9, a reading station 10 and a card ejection station 11. A card (in position CDP, Figs. 10A and 10B) at the punching station may be punched from an electric keyboard 3, Fig. 2, or from a card (in position CDL) scanned by brushes BR at the reading station under the control of programme cards 67, 68, Fig. 2, carried by drums 14, 15 mounted on shafts 108, 114, respectively, Fig. 8. Cards are fed through the punching and reading stations by means of discs 90 and 110 and presser rollers 91. and 127, under the control of escape mechanism and through the stopping position 9 by means of a pair of rollers 120, 121, Fig. 10A. Discs 90 and 110 are driven from an electric motor 23, Fig. 8, through transmissions including a friction coupling 93. Cards are registered at the punching and reading stations by means of levers 83 and 125, Fig. 10A, acting in conjunction with abutments 84, Fig. 10B, and 126. The card supply and ejection mechanisms are operated from the motor 23 through transmissions including clutches controlled by electromagnets C51 and C58, Fig. 8. A card transmitted to ejection station 11 is taken up by rotary helices 193 and 194, Fig. 10A, and inserted in stack FE. The magazine 6 is. provided with a movable partition 26 to enable cards of different size to be processed. The machine is controlled by electric circuits, Figs. 17A, 18A, 19 and 20 (not shown).
