A yielding pit prop comprises a solid core a which receives at least one penetrating member e and is reinforced by a helical wrapping b, f. The member a may be made of wood, resin-bonded material or rigid plastics foam reinforced with layers of glass fibre running in the yield direction. The member e may be provided with one or more slots to receive a taper wedge or bolt to limit its penetration or such limitation may be effected by a setting ring mounted on the core a, Figs. 2 and 3, (not shown), respectively.
