A cordwinder in an electric floor polisher 10 comprises a frame 15, a cordwinding spool 24 mounted thereon for rotation about a vertical axis; the spool including upper and lower flanges 27, 26 between which the electrical cord 32 is wound and a driving drum 53 mounted on a member 39 secured in a vertical plane to the frame 15 for rotation adjacent the upper flange 27. The drum 53 includes a ring of gear teeth 49 which engage a ring of gear teeth 48 on the upper flange 27 of the spool 24 and a spring storage drum 55 is mounted on the member 39 adjacent the driving drum 53, and a spring 58 prestressed to coil around, but not secured to, the storage drum has its outer end 59 secured to the driving drum 53 to be wound thereon when the spool is rotated by the unwinding of the cord 32. The spool 24 is mounted on a roller bearing 29 which seats in a recess in the frame 15 and a recess in the lower flange 26 of the spool. The upper flange 27 is engaged from above by rollers 41 mounted on wings 39B extending from the member 39. The hub 25 of the spool 24 surrounding the polisher driving motor and a support 38 for the member 39, is formed at its upper edge with the gear teeth 48. The spring 58 which is wound from the grooved periphery of the drum 56 on to that of the drum 53 during cord unwinding is of the constant torque type and when the cord is released the spring rewinds on to the storage drum 56 causing the drum 53 to drive the spool 24 for winding up the cord 32. The inner ends of the wires within the cord 32 are connected to concentric slip rings mounted in an annulus of insulating material in the upper flange of the spool 24. These rings are contacted by leaf springs which are mounted on the wings 39B of the member 39 which is preferably made of insulating material. From these springs, conductors lead to the electric driving motor 14, Fig. 2 (not shown). The whole assembly is enclosed in a head 12 pivotally mounted to a spoke 22b, 22c of a handle 22. The polishing brushes 11 are geared together, one of which is driven by a gear-wheel on the lower end of a spindle extending from the electric motor.
