Abstract
A polymerization catalyst for methyl methacrylate is prepared by reacting an organo tin hydride of the formula R3SnH where R represents a hydrocarbon group with TiCl4 in the proportion of 0.1 to 0.4 mol. of TiCl4 per mol. of the hydride. The preferred hydrides are tributyl, tricyclohexyl, and triphenyl tin hydrides. The catalyst may be performed or formed in situ, and the solvent in which it is formed may also act as the polymerization medium. The medium may be a hydrocarbon, a halogenated hydrocarbon, or an ether such as dioxane or tetrahydrofuran. The polymerization products are recovered by known techniques. The polymethylmethacrylate has a syndiotactic structure.
