Abstract
Rigid cellular structures based on polyvinyl chloride are made by forming a plastisol by mixing polyvinyl chloride or a copolymer containing a major proportion of vinyl chloride, a polymerizable plasticizer for the polymer, which is a bis-ester of a dicarboxylic acid and an unsaturated alcohol, a blowing agent and, if desired, a polymerization catalyst for the plasticizer, and then heating so as to bring about in sequence gelling of the plastisol, foaming of the gel and polymerization of the plasticizer. The platicizer preferably has a boiling-point above 250 DEG C., and is polymerizable in the range 120-220 DEG C. Suitable co-monomers for use with the vinyl chloride are methyl acrylate, vinyl acetate, and acrylonitrile, and suitable polymerization catalysts are those of the free radical type, e.g. t-butyl perbenzoate. The plastisol may be heated by spreading it on a suitable substrate which is conveyed continuously through an oven, the oven having suitably placed heating elements so that the plastisol is subjected to the desired temperature conditions.
