Abstract

3 - Acetoxy- and 3-hydroxy-5-monocyclic aryl - 1,3 - dihydro - 2H - 1,4 - benzodiazepin-2-ones are prepared by reacting an appropriate 5-monocyclic aryl-1,3-dihydro-2H-1,4-benzodiazepin-2-one 4-oxide with isopropenyl acetate or ketene, optionally followed by hydrolysis or hydrolysis and introduction of a hydrocarbon substituent at position 1. The term "aryl" is used in the broad sense of an aromatic radical, and includes heteroaryl and substituted aryl radicals.
