Abstract

1,057,217. Bag-filling apparatus; endless conveyers. BARTELT ENGINEERING CO. Inc. Aug. 20, 1965, No. 35816/65. Headings B8A and B8C. Bags 11 (Fig. 1), are held in a packaging machine by means of clamps 10, 10<SP>1</SP>, each of which comprises a fixed jaw 29 rigidly attached to a bracket 25, and a movable jaw 28 pivoted on a shaft 50 and controlled by a lever 32. The angular relation of the lever 32 and movable jaw 28 is adjustable so that the clamp closes on a bag 11, under the action of spring 57 (Fig. 3, not shown), at the appropriate moment. In the preferred form the bracket 25 is rigidly attached to a link of a continuously moving endless chain 18 which transports the bags to the filling stage of the machine. The lever 32 carries a follower 40 running on a fixed cam track 41 to control closure of the jaws. Bags 11 are supplied from a web travelling at a lower speed than that of the endless chain 18, and are accelerated to a speed greater than that of the chain prior to entry between the jaws of the clamp, which are chamfered to facilitate such entry. A platform 33 supports the bag immediately after reception in the clamp 10, and a second clamp 10<SP>1</SP> facing in the opposite direction clamps on to the rear of the bag. The rear clamp 10<SP>1</SP> tilts forward under the action of a follower 35 on a cam surface 38 (Fig. 4, not shown), in order to open the bag to facilitate filling.
