Abstract

<PICT:1056884/C1/1> Glass batch materials are partially mixed dry, a predetermined amount of liquid is sprayed on to the surface of the batch while continuing the mixing, and mixing is then continued until a substantially homogeneous mix having the liquid uniformly distributed is obtained. The ingredients are fed into a rotary pan 16 in which mixing paddles 33 carrying high and low level shovels 35, 36 are rotatable in a direction opposite to that of the pan. Also rotatable in the pan, and in the same direction at a high speed is an annular member 40 carrying a number of flexible rods reaching nearly to the bottom of the pan. Mounted above the pan is a spray system consisting of pipes 43, 44 having nozzles 49, 50, 51, 52 so constructed and arranged that the sprays avoid direct contact with the paddles, the member 40, or the walls of the pan. In a modification, two members 40 located in opposite quadrants of the pan, are provided.
