1,056,768. Locating underground conductors. LONDON ELECTRICITY BOARD and D. C. MURCH. Sept. 16, 1964 [Sept.24, 1963], No. 37602/63. Heading G1N. Manually portable apparatus for identifying or locating a power supply cable or a metal pipe carrying an alternating current comprises two coils mounted so that, in use, their axes make equal and opposite oblique angles to the horizontal and means for separately but simultaneously indicating the magnitudes of the signals induced in the two coils or separately but simultaneously indicating the sum and the difference of the magnitudes of the signals induced in the two coils. As shown in Fig. 1, the two coils 10, 11 have their axes at 45 degrees to the horizontal but they may be at 20 to 30 degrees to the horizontal or adjustable. A four position switch 17 enables the signals induced in the coils to be fed separately to the gauged attenuators 20 or combined in phase or antiphase and the connections of one coil to be reversed. The attenuators have a calibrated control 21. A pair of adjustable matched amplifiers 22, 23 and detectors feed a crossed pointer indicator. Alternatively, headphones may be used, each amplifier and detector feeding a separate ear piece. The apparatus may have an elongated tubular handle.
