Aerating.-In tanks for the aeration of sewage treated with activated sludge, an air-tight roof D prevents the air injected by diffusers C, N from escaping directly to the atmosphere and deflects it horizontally to an exit M, whereby circulation of the sewage in the tank is set up to effect more efficient aeration. Sewage entering by the inlet B follows the course of the arrows, and in passing through the contracting passage F between a baffle E and the partition J between the tank and the next of the series acquires an increased velocity at which it sweeps over and between the raised floors H, K, preventing sludge from settling thereon. According to a modification, the sewage flows through parallel series of tanks, the roofs of which deflect the air currents across the series of tanks at right-angles to the direction in which the sewage would flow if not influenced by the air, and baffles are so arranged that the resultant flow of sewage is in the nature of a spiral motion.
