Abstract

The invention comprises a reaction product in an aqueous solution of (a) a quaternary ammonium compound with (b) a compound of iodine with an iodide, in the approximate molecular ratio of a : b = 1 : 1; e.g. (a) may be R1R2R3R4N + I3-, where R1 is C1- 18 alkyl or a radical <FORM:1056546/C2/1> where A is C1- 18 alkyl and n and m are each 1-4; R2 and R3 are each C1- 18 alkyl or hydroxyalkyl, and R4 is aralkyl; and (b) may be NaI3 or KI3. The resulting quaternary ammonium triiodides are active against phytopathogenic microorganisms (see Divisions A2 and A5).ALSO:Seeds are protected against phytopathogenic micro organisms by treatment with a quarterndry organicsubstituted ammonium triodide (see Division C2) which may be applied in the form of a powder, solution, suspension, emulsion or paste comprising one or more of the following: a dispersant, an adhesive, a fertilizer, a pesticide, a powdered solid, e.g. inert, carrier (see Division A5). The solution, suspension, emulsion or paste may comprise water or an organic liquid, e.g. an organic solvent.ALSO:Compositions for combatting phytopathogenic microorganisms comprise a quarternary ammonium triiodide (see Division C2) in association with a suitable carrier, e.g. one or more of a solvent, dispersant, adhesive, fertilizer or further pesticide; examples of these are given. The compositions may be pastes, powders, emulsions, suspensions, solutions or sprays.
