Abstract

<PICT:1056502/C6-C7/1> A box annealing furnace wherein inert gases heated to 1100-1400 DEG F. anneal steel strip or sheet coils comprises an annular refractory base 1 on which is mounted an annulus 2 having radial flow passages 3 with a base plate 4 for supporting the coils, e.g. 5, 6 and 7 separated by convector plates 8 and 9 and crowned by a cover plate 10, a single cover 13 supported on the base, e.g. through a hermetic seal 16, and spaced from the coils to form an annular flow passage around the coils, an injector nozzle 21 extending through opening 19 in the base, a heating device (see Fig. 2, not shown) such as a fuel/air burner for heating the inert gases, e.g. N2 and H2 with or without CO, CO2 and CH4, and delivering them under pressure through pipe 20 to the nozzle 21 for circulation e.g. at 3000-7500 c.f.m. through the eyes of the coils and around the coils at reduced pressure and out through passage 22 for recirculation in pipe 23. After annealing the inert gases may be circulated through a cooling device (see Fig. 3, not shown) to effect rapid cooling e.g. to 300 DEG F. of the annealed coils. A bleeder pipe 26 communicating with a flame detector 27 is provided to indicate that the furnace chamber is free from an oxidizing atmosphere; inert gas is initially supplied through a pipe 24.
