Abstract
High molecular weight polyhydroxypolyethers of the formula [-CH2CH(OH)CH2OROR1O-]n are prepared by polymerizing one or more mono(hydroxyaliphatic) mono-glycidyl diethers of dihydric phenols of formula <FORM:1056384/C3/1> wherein R is the aromatic residue of a dihydric phenol and R1 is a divalent hydrocarbon or ether group containing at least 2 carbon atoms in the presence of a Lewis acid. Specified R radicals are those derived from resorcinol, hydroquinone and bisphenol. Specified R1 groups are ethyl, isopropyl and -CH2-CH(Ph)-. Suitable Lewis acids are BF3, BF3 complexes, AlCl3, SnCl4, TiCl4 and H2SO4. The reaction is preferably carried out in a ketone, ether or ester solution. The products may be reacted with acid anhydrides, monobasic acids or cross-linking agents, e.g. polyisocyanates, polyepoxides and the reaction products of formaldehyde, or formaldehyde and a alcohol, with urea, melamine, benzoguanamine or phenol. The examples describe the polymerization of (1)-(3) the monoglycidyl mono(hydroxyethyl)-either of bisphenol, (4) the monoglycidyl mono(hydroxypropyl) diether of bisphenol and (7) the monoglycidyl mono(hydroxyethyl)diether of resorcinol. The product of (7) and the mixed product of (1) and (4) were cross-linked with butylated urea formaldehyde, and that of (4) with tolylene diisocyanate.ALSO:Wood, metal and glass are coated with polyhydroxy polyethers comprising polymers of mono (hydroxy-aliphatic) monoglycidyl diethers of dihydric phenols (see Division C3). The polyethers are cross-linked with polyisocyanates, polyepoxides, aminoplast resins alkylated methylol melamine resins, acid anhydrides and unsaturated acids. In Examples (5), (6) and (7) films are prepared on glass and cured by baking.
