Abstract

Silicate fibres are totally encased in a polyolefin by a process which comprises treating the fibres with the components of a multicomponent organo-metallic transition metal catalyst system before the components of the system have fully reacted with each other, at least one of the components being reactive with the silicate fibres at the time of treatment so as to form catalytic sites on the fibres, and thereafter bringing the treated fibres into contact with an aliphatic 1-olefin containing less than 6 carbon atoms and polymerizing the olefin. Olefins specified include ethylene, propylene, and butadiene. Silicate fibres is defined as including fibres made of silica and borosilicates, rock-wool, talc, and asbestos. The fibres are preferably reacted with one of the components of the catalyst and then contacted with the other preferably in the presence of the olefine.
