Abstract

1,055,855. Converting. SOCIETE GENERALE DE CONSTRUCTIONS ELECTRIQUES ET MECANIQUES (ALSTHOM). May 24, 1965 [May 22, 1964], No. 21894/65. Heading H2F. A polyphase bridge inverter of controlled rectifiers 1 ... 6, incorporates shut-off circuitry comprising a series combination of capacitor 20, inductor 21 and auxiliary back-to-back controlled rectifiers (24 ... 29) for each phase. In the embodiment of Fig. 1 each main rectifier fires for 120 degrees and a separate D.C. supply 34, 35, is provided for charging the capacitor 20. At commutation from rectifier 1 to rectifier 2, the rectifiers 2, 22 and 26 are fired and the capacitor (charged as shown) discharges along the dotted path shutting off rectifier 1. The capacitor becomes reversely charged due to the resonant L.C. circuit 20, 21, and the lost voltage due to dissipated energy is made up from the source 34, 35, by firing rectifiers 30 and 33. The capacitor 20 is now correctly charged to shut off the thyristor 6 at the next commutation when thyristors 4, 23 and 27 are fired. Reverse diodes 14. . . 19 are provided to pass excess shut-off current. In a different embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown) the separate charging circuit (30 ... 35) is dispensed with and chokes are included in the bridge arms. In this embodiment, conduction is for 180 degrees, so that when the auxiliary rectifiers are fired to switch off rectifier 1, its associated rectifier 4 is also fired. This completes a circuit 22, 20, 21 and 4 for reversely changing the capacitor from the main D.C. supply. The chokes aid commutation by providing additional blocking voltage on the shutting off rectifier, and limit short-circuit current through the series connection of rectifiers 1 and 4 occurring at commutation.
