Abstract

A composition for coating textiles comprises a pre-cured lower unsaturation elastomer and a heat condensable water-soluble phenol formaldehyde resin. Butyl rubber is the specified lower unsaturated elastomer and resorcinolformaldehyde the resin. A filler material, e.g. diatomaceous earth, may also be present and the composition may be heated to cure the resin from the water-soluble to the water-insoluble stage. The composition is preferably an aqueous solution or emulsion. The butyl rubber may contain the usual vulcanizing and compounding ingredients before it is precured and so may the mixture of precured rubber and resin.ALSO:Textile materials, e.g. woven cloth are coated with a pre-cured butyl rubber, latex together with a phenol formaldehyde condensate reacted to only the water soluble intermediate stage only, then heated to complete condensation to the water insoluble resin stage. An example coats a textile material which is then heated for 10 minutes at 170 DEG C. with 182 parts pre-cured butyl latex, 137 parts dispersed factice (36% solids), 100 parts amorphous diatomaceous silica, 2 parts dispersant, 5 parts water soluble phenol-formaldehyde resin and 390 parts water.
