Abstract

1,055,509. Data transmission. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. May 6, 1965 [May 11, 1964], No. 19127/65. Heading H4P. In a system for testing a line used for data transmission by repeatedly transmitting a test message, the receiver includes means for counting the received bits and for comparing the received message with an identical locally stored message, any difference detected causing the count indicated by the counter to be passed to a store. In the embodiment described the message, derived from the line signals, comprises a series of clock pulses preceded by a higher amplitude pulse indicating the start of the series. Counters count each bit and each start pulse. A magnetic tape record provides the local message series for comparison with the clock pulse series. Upon detection of an error, of a line break, or of 100 correct test messages, the bit count and message counts are read into a core store, together with signals indicating the reason for the read-in. The store is arranged in halves, used alternately so that, simultaneously with read-in, data stored previously can be read out to a magnetic tape recorder.
