Abstract

[Also in Division F2] In a seat suspension for a vehicle vertical movement of a seat pan 1 is transmitted by a bar 2 to a piston 3 which is movable in a cylinder 4 secured to the vehicle by brackets 7. Piston 3 divides cylinder 4 into compartments 5, 6. Compartment 5 is connected to a supply conduit 8 of a hydraullic circuit. The pressure in conduit 8 is maintained at a predetermined fixed operating pressure by a check valve 15. Compartment 6 communicates with a closed surge tank 20 and with an auxiliary cylinder 30 through a conduit 21. Cylinder 30 is divided into two compartments 32, 33 by a free piston 31. A body 22 of liquid completely fills compartments 6, 32 and conduit 21 and traps a cushion of air or nitrogen in tank 20. A conduit 34 connects compartment 33 with a return line 10 of the hydraulic circuit. The constant pressure in supply conduit 8 applied to piston 3 is counteracted by pressure of gas cushion 23. When seat 1 is displaced downwardly additional liquid is supplied to compartment 4 at constant pressure. When the vehicle moves over uneven ground gas cushion 23 is alternately compressed and contracted. A rapid rise of seat pan 1 is prevented by the damping effect inherent in the liquid system. A check valve 28 and throttle 27 may be provided to increase the damping effect. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown) vertical movements of seat pan 65 are transmitted to an axially movable piston 62 in a cylinder 60 by a lever 63, 64 pivoted at 66 and piston rod 61.
