Abstract

1,055,091. Gas chromatography injector. NATURAL RUBBER PRODUCERS' RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. Dec. 6, 1963 [Dec. 12, 1962], No. 46868/62. Heading B1L. A method of introducing a sample for gas chromatography comprises injecting a liquid sample into a heated carrier gas stream whilst it is passing through a Venturi in a gassageway within a metal block which is maintained at a temperature above that of the column. The gas is then passed to a metal equilibrator tube which is in thermal contact with the block and with a heat sink operating at the temperature of the column. Thus all liquid is vaporized and the gas stream enters the column from the equilibrator at the column temperature. The metal block and heat sink may both be made of a high thermal conductivity material e.g. copper, copper alloy or aluminium. The heat sink may be constituted by the chromatography column or a metal block. The equilibrator tube may be lower thermal conductivity than the block e.g. stainless steel, and the tube surface may be at ambient temperature, thus ensuring a uniform temperature gradient along the tube. Alternatively the tube may be of high thermal conductivity e.g. copper, copper alloy or aluminium and the temperature gradient established by the dimensions of the tube and/or cooling the surface with a current of air. A heated brass block 1 has a passageway 2 in the form of a Venturi with a feeder passage 3 coming from a tube 4 having a serum cap 5 closing one end thereof. A by-pass 6 enables carrier gas from tube 7 to sweep all the sample out of tube 4. Secured to the block in good thermal contact is a stainless steel equilibrator tube 8 containing stainless steel gauze rings 9 which are supported by gauze discs 10. The outlet end of the stainless steel tube may be connected to one end of a thick-walled aluminium chromatography column which may be thermostatically controlled. The temperature difference between block and sink may be 10‹C. The vaporized sample is said to enter the column as a "square pulse".
