Abstract

Gibberellic acid is freed from other gibberellins occurring in commercial mixtures thereof, by treatment of such mixtures with diazomethane in ethereal solution, to give a mixture of gibberellin methyl esters, followed by chromatography of these esters on alumina with a benzene/ether mixture; the methyl ester of gibberellic acid is finally eluted with a methanol/ether mixture, recrystallized from dioxane, and hydrolysed with methanolic potash. The acid and the other gibberellins are useful in pharmaceutical compositions (see Division A5).ALSO:Pharmaceutical compositions comprise at least one of gibberellic acid, gibberellin-A1,-A2, or -A4, or a therapeutically suitable salt of these, together with a therapeutically inert vehicle. Suitable pharmaceutical forms include tablets, ointments, and sterile injectable solutions.
