Abstract
1,054,945. Cutting glass. LKB-PRODUKTER A.B. Aug. 29, 1963 [Aug. 31. 1962]. No. 34239/63. Heading C1M. Glass knives for microtomes are made by scoring at a desired angle to the side edge of a glass plate held in a fixed position, and breaking the plate along the plane of the score while the plate is retained in the fixed position. In one form, the glass sheet 1 is supported on rounded studs 8 projecting from a base plate 6 through a soft surface layer 7 which serves to dampdown vibrations and assist in producing a clean break. A guide 16, spring mounted in a groove in the base plate, supports a slide 15 carrying a scratching-point 14 midway between the studs 8. Studs 9 engage the upper face of the glass sheet directly opposite the studs 8 and a screw 10 is arranged directly above the scratch. In an alternative construction, the marking point 42 is mounted in a pivoted holder 41 carried by a rod 40 slidable in a member 32 arranged for vertical movement in the frame 31 and adapted to be locked in adjusted position. The glass is held down by studs 45 arranged on each side of and equidistant from the point 42 and is supported by studs 46 beneath the scratch line. The studs are carried by a base mounted in the frame 31 and adapted to be raised by an eccentric 49 operable by a hand wheel 51.
