Abstract

105,485. Quasi-Arc Co., and Cole, W. L. July 25, 1916. Uniting by fusion.-Welded joints for ships, boilers, tanks, metal walls, &c. are produced by the oxyacetylene or arc welding processes, but especially by the quasi-arc process using electrodes as described in Specification 13538/14. Butt joints are formed between the plates, and cover-strips are applied in such a manner that, on cooling, the cover-strips are in tension and the plates at the joint are in compression. The plates are first united together and to the coverstrip c, Fig. 3, by added metal d, and then the cover-strip is united to the plates at its edges by fillets f. The cover-strip heats up more than the plates during the uniting, thus producing the result stated above. The plates need not be bevelled at their edges, and the strip c may be thicker at the centre than at the edges. The plates may be bevelled on the side of the cover-strip, and are then first united at d, Fig. 6, after which the cover-strips are welded on at g through holes or slots, the fillets being added last. The joint shown in Fig. 3 may have a strip added on the other side in this manner.
