Abstract

1,054,764. Olefine-acetylene block copolymers. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODAFABRIK A.G. Sept. 27, 1963 [Oct. 2, 1962], No. 38138/63. Heading C3P. Block copolymers containing double bonds are made by polymerizing singly and alternately a monoolefine and an acetylene at pressures of up to 25 atmospheres and temperatures between room temperature and 150‹ C. using catalysts composed of organometallic compounds of Groups IA, IIA, IIB and III and compounds of metals of Groups IVB, VIB, VIIB and VIII of the Periodic Table. The alternate polymerization of the monomers involves at least three alternations of feed with the monoolefine as the first feed, and the resulting polymers contain from 1 to 10% by weight of combined acetylene. The polymers may be hydrogenated or nitrated, or may be added to rubber in vulcanization. Catalyst systems exemplified are mixtures of titanium trichloride with triethylaluminium, diethylaluminium monochloride or diethylberyllium, mixtures of titanium tetrachloride with triethylaluminium, triisobutylaluminium or butyllithium, a mixture of vanadium oxychloride and methylaluminium sesquichloride, and a mixture of chromium trichloride and triethylaluminium. The catalyst system may be formed in the presence of pre-formed powdered isotactic polypropylene. The process is preferably carried out in the presence of an inert diluent, e.g. an aliphatic hydrocarbon. The examples describe making the following block copolymers: (1) poly-(propylene-b-acetylene), (2) poly - (propylene - b - phenylacetylene), (4) poly - ([ethylene - co - propylene] - b - acetylene), (7) poly - (ethylene - b - propine), (8) poly- (styrene - b - acetylene), (9) poly - (butene - 1 - b - acetylene), (10) poly - (ethylene - b - diacetyene), and (11) poly-(ethylene-b-acetylene).
