Abstract

1,054,658. Organosilicon copolymers. GENENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Feb. 6, 1964 [Feb. 28, 1963 (2)], No. 5041/64. Heading C3T. A stable copolymerizable composition comprises an olefinic siloxane of the formula R a R<SP>1</SP> b SiO 4-a-b /2, a hydrogen siloxane of the formula R a H b SiO 4-a-b /2, wherein R is a monovalent hydrocarbon (h.c.), halo-h.c. or cyanoalkyl radical, R<SP>1</SP> is an unsaturated aliphatic h.c. radical, a=0 to 3, b=0À005 to 2À0, and a+b= 1.0 to 3, and a mechanical mixture or pre-formed complex of (1) a Pt-containing catalyst and (ii) a N-containing ligand selected from aromatic heterocyclic N compounds having the formula wherein R<SP>11</SP> is an alkyl radical and m is 0 or an integer from 1 to 5, pyrazidine, pyrazine, quinoline, 2,2<SP>1</SP> - bisquinoline, 2,2<SP>1</SP>- bipyridine, naphthyridine, quinaldine, a dialkyl formamide of the formula a thioamide of the formula and an alkyl thiourea of the formula where Z and Z<SP>1</SP> are each methyl or ethyl, Y and Y<SP>1</SP> are each H, methyl or ethyl and q is 0 or 1, or an organophosphorus ligand of the formula where R 1 , R 2 and R 3 are selected from alkyl, aryl, alkaryl, aralkyl, alkoxy, aryloxy, alkaryloxy and aralkoxy radicals. Polymerization is effected by heating the composition to a temperature above 40‹ C. Catalysts (i) specified are platinic chloride and sulphate, Na 2 PtCl 4 , H 2 PtC1 6 , complexes of PtCl 2 and alcohols, ethers or aldehydes, complexes of PtCl 2 or PtCl 3 and olefine, and Pt carboxylate complexes. In a typical Example (i) several compositions, each consisting of a mixture of equal parts of (Vi.MeSiO) 4 and (MeHSiO) 4 , and an ethanol solution of H 2 PtC1 6 .6H 2 O and a specified ligand, a different ligand being used in each composition, were made and heat-polymerized to a soft, resilient, rubber-like product. Uses.-For making gaskets, electrical insulation and capacitators.
