[Also in Division C3] The invention comprises compounds of the formula where X = N or an organic group, R 1 = H or alkyl, R 2 = an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical the carbon chain of which may be interrupted by nitrogen, R 3 = H, alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, alkoxyalkyl or aryl, Z = H, Cl, OH, NH 2 , COOH, an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, aromatic or heterocyclic radical or a residue of an alkylamine, dialkylamine, quaternary ammonium ion, fatty alcohol, fatty acid, fatty acid amine, polyamine, polyimine, polyester, polyether or silicone, m = 2-6, n = 0-4, p and r = 1-100 and q = 0-4. These compounds may be prepared from a compound of formula where Y = glycidyl or -CH 2 CH(OH)CH 2 Cl either by treatment with ammonia or a polyamine having at least 2 primary amino groups and conversion of at least 2 of the amino groups so introduced into urea groups or by direct reaction with an N-aminoalkyl urea. Conversion of an amino-group to a urea-group may be effected with KCNO, urea, introurea or phosgene followed by ammonia or a primary amine. Compounds of Formula II are produced by reacting compounds containing at least 2 active hydrogen atoms (a) with an alkylene oxide; (b) with epichlorohydrin; optionally (c) with a base, e.g. 40% NaOH at 40-50‹ C.; and (d) treatment with a compound containing the functional group Z. Active hydrogen compounds specified include polyhydroxy compounds, e.g. trimethylol propane and pentaerythritol, polycarboxylic acids, polyamines, and compounds having 2 or more different active hydrogen containing groups, e.g. alkanolamines. Alkylene oxides specified include ethylene and propylene oxides. In Example 8 a polyalkylene glycol tetraglycidyl ether of Formula II was prepared in the presence of a glacial acetic acid/ BF 3 mixture. Elsewhere in the examples polyalkylene glycol polyglycidyl ethers are treated with dioctadecylamine (1,2,4), or a condensation product of stearic acid and dipropylene triamine (5), hexamethylene diamine (1, 2, 4) or tetramethylene diamine (5) and KCNO (1, 2, 4, 5).
