A device for dispensing measured quantities of a mouldable plastic material such as used in the bottle cap making machine disclosed in Specification 1,054,451 comprises a body member 39 having inlet and outlet passages 40, 50, a measuring plunger 48 adapted to deliver a measured quantity of material from the inlet to the outlet passage and into the path of a delivery plunger 53, means 51 to close communication between the inlet and outlet passages when the measuring plunger is retracted and means 56, 57, 58 associated with the delivery plunger for discharging compressed air for detaching plastic material from the delivery plunger. The plungers 48, 53 are reciprocated by means of a lever 44, 45, 46 oscillated via a gear-driven crank. In operation, with the measuring plunger in the position shown plastic material is fed by a screw through the inlet passage 40 to fill it. When the measuring plunger is lowered it forces a measured quantity into the outlet passage 50 so that a corresponding amount extends from the end of the outlet passage above a bottle cap L. When the crank again rotates the lever raises the measuring plunger so as to allow more material to enter the inlet and lowers the delivery plunger which cuts off the extruded measured quantity of material and carries it towards the cap. As the delivery plunger reaches the downward limit of its stroke, an air vent passage 58 in the plunger is brought into communication with a cornpressed-air supply passage 56 so that an air jet separates the measured quantity from the plunger. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the delivery plunger is formed from an inner slide member 148 connected to the lever 44 and arranged for limited sliding movement in an outer slide member 134. In operation, when a measured quantity has been extruded into a member 178, the inner and outer slide are moved together downwardly so that the measured quantity is forced through a nozzle 184. Upon the return stroke, a needle valve 162 on the inner slide is withdrawn from an orifice in the lower end of the outer slide so as to permit compressed air to flow through the orifice and force the material into a cap.
